Portsmouth's Memorials of the Great War
The wall of the Cenotaph lists the 4,735 names of the 'sons' of Portsmouth lost in the Great War. Standing proud in the heart of the City this monument links the Guildhall Square and Victoria Park whilst the trains travel overhead to Portsmouth Harbour Station.
Smaller memorials become part of our everyday lives and we pass by perhaps without a second glance. The touching tribute to the 28 employees of the Portsea Island Gas Light Company in the entrance to Wetherspoon's Public House or the wall plaque on the residence at 4 Grand Parade, Old Portsmouth, a personal dedication to all the 'Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the Royal Navy and Marines, Army, Air Force and Mercantile Marines of this City who fell on land and sea in the Great War with Germany 1914-18'.
